Several years before the
recipient of our Hall of Faith recognition was born, his grand-father, Abraham,
looked to our Lord for a son. He blessed Isaac through faith. Isaac, following
the trend, blessed his two sons—Jacob and Esau. Today, one of the recipients of
such blessings blesses his two grand children.
There is an unbroken trend here,
faith provided the connection.
What a remarkable feat! A tradition of
simple trust in God passed from one generation to another. The promise never
waned, neither did the One who made it. Not the longevity of time; not the
effacing tendencies of human memory; and certainly not the insipid sensation of
a listless routine could diminish the potent promise of the one who made it.
“By an act of
faith, Jacob on his deathbed blessed each of Joseph’s sons in turn, blessing
them with God’s blessing, not his own—as he bowed worshipfully upon his staff”.
(Hebrews 11: 22 MSG)
Jacob is stricken in years; his
senses are becoming dull, his consciousness is waning rapidly, his sight
dim, but not his faith in God. His many troubling years could not distort
his blazing sight of the one who could be trusted. Why did the trend continue?
What assurances did Jacob have?
His faith was settled far
beyond conjecture on the kept promises of the generation before him. It was not
a generation punctuated by years of failed or reneged promises; it was years of
promises kept to the beneficiaries.
What does that mean to us, today, as
we read their stories? We see a vivid picture of an unyielding God who never
fails. God never reneges on His promises. The success of His promises does not
depend on the arguments for or against it. Armed with the knowledge of the
unfailing God, we commit our dreams, children, and career to the One who never
fails. That’s why Jacob entrusted his sons to Him. You should entrust your
[fill in the gap] to Him too.
God can be trusted to keep his
word!
