This is the age of bloated
schedules, crammed deadlines, overwhelming to-do lists, and economic meltdown.
The church is at the end of such a backlash, with pews increasingly becoming
bereft of regulars. In all of these, there are still compelling reasons why you
should be committed to you church.
…Because your spiritual
nourishment comes from there: - If you’re desirous of growing in
maturity and godliness, then, no other place provides the right menu like a
church founded on the doctrine of scripture. A regular dose of hymns, spiritual
songs, sermons, exhortations, and worship; and the consternation of individuals
with diverse gifts set you on the path to spiritual vitality (Ephesians 4:11-13).
So if you want to grow, don’t stay out of church!
…Because you need the support
of others: - A
godly congregation provides an atmosphere of fellowship and companionship. The
Christian journey was never meant to be a lonely experience. Your shared
experiences and that of others in the body of Christ provide a strong
foundation for encouragement and help. In our darkest moments we realise that
our Lord has provided a starry of individuals in our Christian community to
give us support and direction. Never underestimate the power of community!
…Because it is an opportunity
for service: - No better platform exists for kingdom
service as the church environment. There is a litany of segments for which your
gifts and talents are sorely needed for building the church and edifying the
saints. If your church is like mine, opportunities for service in the band,
choir, ushering unit, children church, media, and security are avenues for you to
express your faith and commitment. In doing so, an avalanche of joy and
fulfilment flows into your heart.
…Because our Lord commands you
to: - If you will disregard the first three reasons why you
should be committed to your church, you should perhaps give this one a little
more thought. Your church is a community that exists because of Christ’s love
and affection for her; it is a place that enjoys his unrivaled tenderness and
grace. So when our Lord, through His inspired teachers, tell us to not neglect
the gathering [fellowship, community] of believers, He must be damn serious
about it. All we need do is obey Him (Hebrews 10:25).
Let’s take a cue from the
Psalmist declaration: “I was glad when they said to me, Let us go into the
house of the Lord”. Psalm 122:1
